how to not get stressed at Christmas
WITHOUT PRESENTS
You can still have Christmas without the presents. Putting up the decorations, swapping cards, going to church or throwing a party is all very well. But it’s not the presents that make Christmas. The result of receiving (or not) any presents makes absolutely no difference to the day.
Going to a party is fine. And spending time with the family is normal. The only thing that should matter is if you’re spending time with your loved ones. And let’s be honest, that’s what the day is really about.
BETTER COOK
You can still enjoy Christmas by cooking Christmas items. While some people hate the idea of eating a soggy sprout for Christmas lunch, the real burden of some people is to prepare for Christmas lunch or dinner and celebrate Christmas without getting stressed.
Whether it’s meat for lunch, a mouth-watering spread, or a traditional feast, it’s not exactly the healthiest thing to consume on the day. We love turkey and turkey sandwiches – but that’s about it.
TRY EATING CARBS
You can actually enjoy Christmas Dinner by eating carbs. I’m not saying everyone should dive in headfirst to their Christmas dinner. But why not give a leg or two of sprouts a go? A little bit of carrot or pumpkin soup or soup with a scoop of feta cheese is no doubt a delicious alternative.
DON’T EVER CHEAT
The real reason Christmas Day should be fun without cheating others. We’re all guilty of taking the odd bite of something small to tide us over until lunch, but that’s not the point. Christmas Day should be the perfect opportunity to give up on dieting for the day and indulge in everything you want and celebrate Christmas without getting stressed.
we’re not talking cheesy Christmas pudding. We’re talking bread, wine, pasta, cake – anything that you want and don’t ever cheat your loved one, if you’re going to cheat, it can be a big, delicious, cheese sandwich. And you deserve it a.
JUST GO OUT
If your mum and dad are on Skype, why not give them a call instead? If it’s possible to get up early on Christmas morning, try to do that. Christmas Day doesn’t have to be a 9-5 for the whole day.
Maybe you’ll decide to get dressed up and go out to a fancy restaurant. Or, if you can’t be bothered to go out in the cold and crowds, don’t. you must celebrate Christmas without getting stressed.
THE SPECIAL GARDEN EDITION
A magical garden or terrace is the most magical thing you can think of on Christmas Day. And so is a cocktail in hand. The good news is, you can still enjoy a cocktail whilst looking out on to a picturesque view, in your own home.
Eat your Christmas dinner out and have your drinks in bed. You’ll feel infinitely better for it. If you’re not in the country, ditch the turkey and just have a big plate of spaghetti Bolognese and celebrate Christmas without getting stressed.

GET A DRINK
Shameless plug for our newest columnist, your new favorite holiday drink. Sipin’ Minnie – 7% ABV, dry, cask-conditioned lager. Christmas drinking tip: call in sick to work.
The UK Christmas beer market has undergone a dramatic decline. The last few years have seen a bunch of disappointing seasonal ales hit the shelves. But that’s not good news for your liver.
By brewing with German lager yeast, Sippin’ Minnie uses that classic classic German pilsner yeast to give the same taste as a good lager but without the carbohydrate kick.
Christmas drink tip: Sipping’ is great for those who don’t like getting a little bit tipsy. It’s a subtle mix of beverage and beer that has a lower alcohol content than most beer. The result is a refreshing session beer which won’t turn you into a loose-lipped drunk.
BE A LITTLE TASTE ASS
That Tupperware in the background is an official Christmas decoration. You don’t have to decorate the entire house. Just a few string lights, maybe some tinsel and some fairy lights and you’ll be calling it a night before Christmas Eve is even out of bed. And if you need a little help with those, why not get a taste of Christmas inside? Why is Christmas so stressful for me?
That’s right. I said the official Yuletide beer of the UK is Christmas ale. This has been around for hundreds of years. on Christmas try the special performance, Imperial, or Christmas Special.
The best thing about Christmas ale is it just tastes like beer. A bit of Christmas Ale in your eggnog doesn’t mean you’re shirking your responsibilities. It just means you’ve had a Christmas ale. And that’s pretty darn good.
My favorite is the Carling Christmas Ale. The original ale was first brewed in London in 1850. In recent years it has become a Christmas staple. It’s a light beer with a creamy body and smooth taste. Christmas beer tip: it’s actually not that expensive.
Want to make your drinking more fun? Try out the Joy of Six Drinking Game – and just drink freely until Christmas Day is over and celebrate Christmas without getting stressed.
GRAB A BUCKET
Ahh, the classic manly Australian drinking game. I say men, because everyone drinks in the same way, regardless of gender. Never gets old. You hold a glass and take a swig. The next person downs their drink before taking a swig. Repeat.
GO TO FISHING
Fishing on Christmas Day. If the beer, wine and spirit side of Christmas isn’t really for you, or if the fact it’s too cold is making you feel unwell, get out and fish.
It’s cold, it’s quiet, and you can smoke your fags. It’s hard to beat. Don’t forget to come home and cook yourself a salmon dinner for the second half of the day.
